From 1 July 2011 School Uniform Expenses have been included in the Education Tax Refund. To qualify items must be school-approved and include school approved uniforms, hats, footwear and sports uniforms.
Eligible taxpayers will receive a refund of 50% of eligible costs up to the maximum allowable per child. All receipts must be kept for proof of purchase.
Other costs that qualify for the Education Tax Rebate include home computers and laptops, computer related equipment, computer repairs, home internet connections, computer software, school textbooks, stationery and tools for secondary school trade courses.
For the 2010-2011 tax year the maximum refund amounts claimable are $397 for each primary school child and $794 for each secondary school child. The maximum amounts increase each year by the Consumer Price Index.
