During his time in corporate banking David was rated #1 Commercial Manager in NSW, involved in some exciting pilot projects around business development success roadmapping, mentoring and customer management initiatives which live on today.
Originally from Tamworth, David has called the Northern Rivers home since 1980. In all his roles he has enjoyed the challenge of starting small and building a success.
"I'm a people person and I value the importance of relationships," says David. "They help us achieve our goals and aspirations and I get to meet some really good people in the process."
Having endured major upheavals like deregulation and the global financial crisis, David exudes tenacity and confidence. As Principal in his own lending business he is immersed in pulling together loan applications for SMSFs, residential / investment property and construction as well as business purchases and even personal loans for those starting out or needing a hand.
David's advice is straight to the point. He can formulate the best lending options without all the legwork, thanks to years of being both a lender and a broker during which he acquired unique ability to translate any jargon plus exposure to a number of different lenders.
"A lot of what I do involves opening people's eyes to other options and tailoring the best plan for each situation. For me it's about doing the business first – streamlining the process and removing the hassle from researching and interpreting loan issues in ways that may not be picked up by my clients."
With the Northern Rivers booming in recent years, David has seen many self-employed small businesses flourish with population growth generating more employment, as well as people starting up their own businesses with the influx of trades and other skilled workers into our region.
"For anyone self-employed you need to run your business and take a wage to service your debts – is there sustainable income or industry change ahead that affects your ability to secure the finance you need?"
David's due diligence includes reviewing the financial statements and clients' needs analysis to understand the needs that the applicant is seeking and how he can match those with a suite of products from different lenders.
"At times I need to play the devil's advocate to help achieve the end goal in the most effective way and eliminate as many questions as possible regarding an application," says David. "I like to see the finished result by making sure something can happen, or offering another solution rather than hanging and hoping for the best."
David feels that the change in credit appetite by lenders will make things harder going forward.
"Understanding your living costs, making sure those are reflected on paper and being prepared to make lifestyle or spending changes to service a loan not only helps being approved for finance, but also keeps your head above water."
As dedicated assistant coach of Ballina Seagulls U18s it's all about instilling teamwork, discipline and having fun on and off the field. And, at the end of 2018, David and his fellow Our Kids Golf Day founders raised another $12,000 to purchase paediatric equipment for Lismore Hospital. Since they started in 2005, the event has raised a staggering $175,000!
"It seemed ludicrous to us that if a bub was born or transferred to Lismore Hospital, there were only three humidicribs and the next bub in need of a humidicrib would most likely be flown to the Gold Coast for emergency treatment. This only caused more upset and stress, so we decided that raising funds to buy extra equipment would be a good cause," says David.
"Our Kids fundraising group nominates one piece of equipment they need for the year and we raise the money to buy it. The golf day is enthusiastically supported by businesses through thick and thin – even when there was major flooding in 2017, Lismore still turned out to support the kids!"
"Thanks to the Our Kids Golf Day and our supporters, Our Kids has been able to purchase a dozen pieces of equipment over the years including more humidicribs, a resuscitation table, jaundice blankets and phototherapy lights. We look forward to the golf day every year as we've been doing it for so long and everyone has great fun – there's even a waiting list as it's such a tremendous day!"
It's very much a part of who David is and his overall approach to work and life.
"When I can honestly appraise a situation seeing that it might not work but then putting in place a strategy to make it happen over a longer term, as long as that person is committed and we touch base along the way to make sure they're in shape, I can help turn those dreams into reality. If I can do something to help someone that makes me feel good."
